University of Birmingham

University of BirminghamThe Microwave Integrated Systems Laboratory (MISL) is the radar research group at the School of Electronic, Electrical and Computer Engineering (EECE) at the University of Birmingham (UoB). The group was founded in 2000 by Prof. Mikhail Cherniakov and covers different aspects of radar systems technology. It currently consists of 3 academic staff members, 5 research fellows, 11 Ph.D students and 4 international academic visitors. Its annual turnover is approximately £900k, obtained through research projects (EU, UK) or from industry through direct contracts (SELEX ES) or strategic partnerships (Jaguar Land Rover).

Within this group, Dr. Michail Antoniou leads research on GNSS-based SAR, with a team of 4 fulltime PhD students and three international academic visitors. The team in UoB has been developing GNSS-based Synthetic Aperture Radar since 2002. They were the first to propose this technology and study it on the theoretical and experimental levels. As a result, the group demonstrated the world’s first real image of the Earth using a navigation satellite in 2007. The group is continuing research on different aspects of this topic, with over 30 publications in international conferences and high ranking journals such as the IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing and the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters.

SAPIENZA University of Rome

Sapienza - cloisterThe Department of Information Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunications (DIET) of University of Rome "La Sapienza" performs basic and applied multidisciplinary research of excellence especially in the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) and micro/nanotechnology areas for advanced electronic and optoelectronic systems. Research at DIET is carried out in the frame of several national and international projects focused on the development of both cabled and wireless transmission systems and networks, radar systems, remote sensing systems, electronic measurements, sensors, multimedia and bioengineering applications.

The team involved in this project carries on its activity inside the research group on Radar, Remote Sensing and Navigation (RRSN) of DIET. The considerable activity of the RRSN research group is a result of the geographical location of the Italian radar industry that is largely concentrated in the area around Rome and has been stimulating over the years continuous research and development activities, carried out in strict cooperation. The international visibility of the RRSN research group is largely demonstrated by the continuous presence of contribution to technical international journals and conferences. The continuous activity of the RRSN group of DIET is demonstrated by the multiplicity of research projects in which it is active, that span from large international co-operations for the space exploration (the radar of CASSINI, Mars Express, Sharad), to the involvement in EC projects (LIMES, ATOM, ARGUS 3D, DOLPHIN), to involvement in Italian Space Agency projects (radar for COSMO-SkyMed), to the support to the national industry on a continuous basis. The RRSN research group has a specific consolidated experience in the field of radar system design and radar signal processing.

Elettronica GmbH

Elettronica GmbH has been founded in 1978 in Meckenheim by the Italian Company Elettronica S.p.A. and since then it has been growing as an engineering system house with in-house development, production and integration capabilities. Elettronica GmbH is today an innovative technology provider, organised around three business lines, i.e. (A) high-quality electronic production, (B) system-to-platform integration, and (C) test & training systems. In 2015 a significant renovation project has been carried out in the Production site of Meckenheim, which brought to the achievement of the EN 9100 Certification for the Aerospace and Defence markets. In the integration domain, Elettronica GmbH has gained the leading role in the group for the design and integration of electronic systems for civil and Public Security applications. More than 150 special vehicles have been provided to Customers worldwide. For test & training applications Elettronica GmbH has designed, manufactured and field-tested a wide range of products, which are nowadays operated by End Customers in tens of bases and land/naval installations. 

Most recent milestones for Elettronica GmbH are:

  1. Series manufacturing of radio link Printed Circuit Boards for Telecommunication Customers.
  2. Delivery of special vehicles for land border surveillance over the electro-magnetic and Electro-optical/infrared spectrum.
  3. Design & Development of mobile, integrated TX/RX test equipment for the validation of naval radar/Electronic Warfare systems through the emission of a complex electro-magnetic scenario and the reception/analysis of the reaction of the platform under test.

Through its laboratories, production and installation facilities, the Engineering and Production teams, and a wide network of partners, Elettronica GmbH is today capable of designing, developing and integrating complex electronic Systems for Military Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance (ISR) and Electronic Attack, and for Public/Homeland Security applications on board ground, naval and air platforms.
